An El Paso woman is dead following a chain-reaction crash involving three vehicles near Vado Thursday night.

According to a news release, Ruben Rojas, 65, of Mesquite was driving eastbound on I-10 when he drove onto the highway’s shoulder and crashed into the rear end of a parked truck, which then hit an unoccupied vehicle also on the shoulder.

Officials say the vehicles were parked on the shoulder waiting for a tow truck.

According to state police, Michelle Cuaron, 57, was in the truck and was taken to an El Paso hospital where she later died.

The truck’s other passengers were taken to University Medical Center with unknown injuries.

Police say alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in the crash and seatbelts do not appear to have been properly utilized.

Rojas was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center under the following charges:

  • Three counts of Aggravated Driving While Under the Influence of intoxicating Liquor or Drugs resulting in Great Bodily Injury or death
  • Open Containers
  • Careless Driving

The crash remains under investigation.
