UTEP Presidential nominee Heather Wilson pens letter to UT Chancellor

Education

KTSM obtained a letter sent to the University of Texas System Chancellor James Miliken from former Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson as she plans to schedule another visit to El Paso to visit the UTEP campus.

Wilson is the sole finalist for UTEP president, which has caused some controversy among students and community leaders who have brought her prior voting record while a New Mexico Congresswoman into question.

In her letter to Miliken, Wilson writes “I am drawn to UTEP because it is exceptional, because of its potential, and because of its storied history of being inclusive, not exclusive. I am drawn to UTEP because of its unique bi-cultural, bi-national character.”

It is unclear when Wilson’s second visit to the University will be, but UTEP students are already planning a protest next Wednesday.

The University of Texas Regents announced Wilson as their sole pick to replace Dr. Diana Natalicio as UTEP’s President on March 8. A standard 21-day waiting period is currently in place before she will officially be confirmed. The waiting period will be up at the end of this week, however, the UT Regents have yet to post an agenda for the official vote.
