SISD teacher uses unique motivation for STAAR test

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Testing season is underway for many students in the Borderland and each school district is taking a different approach in helping their students cope with stress and overcome the anxiety that often comes with the testing environment.

Teachers at Socorro ISD’s John Drugan School in Far East El Paso say they noticed STAAR test preparation taking a toll on students. Wanting to help, one teacher surprised her students with motivational posters handmade by the students’ parents.

The posters each have inspirational messages meant to help ease the students’ stress and encourage them to do their best when test time comes around.

“The message was, I wanted the kids to know that they’re not alone on this and that they have support from their parents,” Linda Gutierrez, 6th-grade Pre-AP teacher explained.

“They have support from myself and it takes all three of us together to make sure we’re successful at this and so that’s where this came about and I think the kids really really enjoyed it and it gave them a sense of ‘okay, I’m not alone’ and ‘I can do this as well,'” she said.
