EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Socorro Independent School District is celebrating its latest award.
SISD has been given the $100,000 Excellence in Education award from HEB, a popular grocery chain.
“It’s a huge honor, it’s basically saying you’re the best school district in the state of Texas,” said SISD Superintendent Jose Espinoza. “For SISD to win speaks volumes of what’s taking place at Soccoro ISD.”
HEB launched the Excellence in Education awards in 2002 to support school districts across the state.
SISD is the first district in El Paso to win the award.
“This is not even an HEB market,” Espinoza said. “There’s no HEB here for them to announce SISD as the winner of $100,000. It really says a lot about what is happening here with our amazing $47,000-plus students.”
Espinoza says what makes SISD stand out from the rest of the school district is that the parents have trust in what they’re doing and the district treats students as if they were their very own.
“Not one department, not one campus can do this alone,” he said. “It takes that saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ working together as a team. Team SISD has been the huge key to our success here at SISD.”
As for what SISD will use the money for, Espinoza said it will go towards operational costs, which includes paying teachers overtime, for when they have to tutor students, and college-readiness programs in all of the district’s schools.
