Irvin track coach Arcadio “Archie” Duran was tragically killed in a bus crash last April, but his memory continues to live on.
As KTSM previously reported, Duran was traveling from Lubbock in a charter bus with 25 students and athletic staff when a truck hit them head-on. The driver of the truck, Gary Lawson, 51, also died in the crash.
“They were coming back from regionals and they were excited,” an Irvin student told KTSM following the crash. “To think you’re coming back and you just won, then you crash and two lives are lost.”
With the help of the Paso del Norte Foundation, Duran’s family created the Coach Archie Duran Memorial Fund to provide college scholarships for EPISD students.
“Our brother’s spirit and memory will continue to live through us. We want to honor him by establishing this fund and giving back to the community that inspired him so much,” Duran’s younger brother, Alex, wrote on the fund’s website.
According to a news release, the organization’s fundraising efforts helped provide two EPISD student athletes with scholarships since the fund was created.
In addition to continuing its scholarship efforts, the organization also plans to provide teachers with grants to help them purchase school supplies.
