The last day to file your taxes is April 15th and if you need help, high school students in the Socorro Independent School District can help you for free.

If you make $54,000 a year or less students at Americas, Eastlake, Socorro, Montwood and Pebble Hills High Schools will file your taxes free of charge. These students are IRS Income Tax certified and have the help of the volunteer income tax assistance program to oversee their work.

“Because doing your taxes is a scary thought, and having students prepare your taxes might not sit well with some people,” said Raquel Gomez a teacher at Pebble Hills High School. “We want everyone to feel at ease all of our students have been trained we also have representatives from GECU who are certified as well we have them available at our site to assist us.”

Not only does this service help the community, but it also teaches students real-world skills and experiences.

“I just want to help out the community, and I also feel like its going to give me skills I need for the workplace,” said Abril Lechuga a senior at Pebble Hills High School. I’m learning a lot about working with different people different cases so its really good to connect with others, get more of a feel of what the real world is going to be like.”
