El Paso Independent School District voters have an important election approaching on May 4, as three school board trustee positions are up for grabs.

Voters will be deciding who their trustee is in the Austin HS, Coronado HS, and Franklin HS districts. A fourth district, which covers the Burges HS feeder pattern, is also up for re-election. However, current trustee Al Velarde is running unopposed in that position.

The vote comes after a tumultuous year on the Board of Trustees for EPISD. District 7 Representative, and former board President, Dori Fennenbock, stepped down in 2018 to run for Congress against Veronica Escobar. Her position was replaced by PTA representative from Coronado Mickey Loweree.

Franklin area Trustee Trent Hatch took over Fennenbock’s position as Board President, but stepped down in February after the board was presented with information that Hatch was living outside of the Franklin district during his tenure on the board.

The Austin HS area has been without representation since Susie Byrd stepped down in November to join Veronica Escobar’s Congressional staff.

In the coming months, EPISD will be deciding and implementing the closure and consolidation of several campuses and providing oversight of the 2016 Bond.

The candidates are as follows:

District 2 – Burges

  • Alfonso ‘Al’ Velarde

District 3 – Austin

  • Rene A. Vargas
  • Joshua Acevedo
  • Cynthia Cooper
  • Benjamin Mendoza

District 6 – Franklin

  • Thomas S. Hicks
  • Gary Berglund
  • Fareed ‘Freddy’ Khlayel

District 7 – Coronado

  • Daniel E. Call
  • Mickey Loweree

Election Day is Saturday, May 4. Early voting will be held from Monday, April 22 through Tuesday, April 30.
