A local high school student now has $40,000 to put towards her college education after winning two prestigious scholarships.
According to a news release, Bel Air High School senior Vanesa Carrillo was the only El Paso student to be selected as a 2019 Coca-Cola Scholar, which comes with a $20,000 award.
Carrillo is also among 500 students in the country to have been awarded the 2019 Dell Scholarship.
“Being able to represent my Hispanic community and becoming a role model for many students is a privilege,” she said. “I am beyond grateful for the support that my family, teachers, and advisors provide for me.”
District officials say Carrillo will attend the four-day Leadership Development Institute at Coca-Cola’s international headquarters in Atlanta next month.
According to the release, the Dell Scholarship will provide $20,000 for tuition, textbooks, a laptop, and financial, emotional, and academic support throughout her college career.
Carrillo is also a finalist for the Terry Foundation Scholarship. She says she plans to study marketing and psychology in the fall.
