Las Cruces police have identified the man and woman killed early Sunday morning after the driver of a SUV plowed them down as they walked along Valley View Ave.

Denise Chavez, 29 and Arturo Cordova, 36, were walking along Valley View Drive around 4 a.m. Sunday, May 7 when a GMC Yukon driven by 50-year-old Carlos Garcia struck and killed them before driving into a rock wall.

According to investigators, Garcia had been in an argument with several people at a home on Calle Americana before he struck Chavez and Cordova. Both pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene.

Garcia was seriously injured when he struck the rock wall and was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso where he is still in critical but stable condition.

The investigation into the crash continues and charges against Garcia are expected, but have not yet been filed.
