On Thursday, a surprising argument was presented in the court room in the trial of a foster father accused of killing his 11-month-old foster daughter.
Antonio Lopez is accused of killing baby Jayla Beckley by stomping on her. Lopez had initially denied harming the baby, but later confessed to investigators that he hurt her.
Today the defense team brought several witnesses to the stand, including a minor who the defense team argues might be an another suspect in death of baby Jayla. That minor is now 15 years old and she flew in from Arizona for the trial.
Her former El Paso foster mother Mari Medina took the stand and says the minor, who was 12 years old at the time, was inside the home where baby Jayla was killed. Medina and another witness say the minor told them she killed baby Jayla. According to other witnesses the minor has a past of assaulting other foster kids.
The minor denied killing the baby when she took the stand today. She also didn’t recognized Lopez in the courtroom and says she didn’t see him in the house at the time of the incident.
According to Medina, the minor and another foster child would joke about Jayla’s death, but the minor says that’s also not true.
The wife and mother-in-law of Lopez also took the stand. The wife says she doesn’t think Lopez did it. The mother-in-law told the jury Lopez has never had a violent history and she’s never seen him upset with foster children, nor his own kids.
