Cutting Humor won the 16th Running of the Grade III Sunland Derby Sunday afternoon, with a time of 1:46.94. The Kentucky-bred horse came into the race at 8-1 mornling-line odds.
With the win, Cutting Humor earns 50 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby, making the thoroughbred a virtual lock to run at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4. The win at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino comes with an $800,000 purse.
Cutting Humor’s jockey, John Velazquez, has won the Kentucky Derby twice (2011, 2017) and the Belmont Stakes twice (2007, 2012) in his career. The horse’s trainer, Todd Pletcher, also has two Kentucky Derby wins to his credit.
“He may not be the favorite…but as long as he wins, that’s fine with me,“ said owner Ginny DePasquale.
