If you’re looking for something to do this winter, there’s something to do in Cloudcroft you won’t find anywhere else in the state: a natural ice rink.
Friday’s cold weather made for a perfect day to get out and skate. Ruby Bernal even made the drive from Las Cruces to celebrate her 14th birthday.
“I wanted to do something different than just like a sleepover or anything, and I wanted my friends to try something new in case they hadn’t tried it,” said Bernal.
It’s is also the southern-most all natural outdoor rink in the country, located high up in the Lincoln National Forest on James Canyon Highway.
Owner Donald Wiklund says since the early 1900s, people have come here to skate in the cold months.
During the 60s, former mayor James Sewell started filling it in all winter long, and since then has grown into what you see today.
“I really like ice skating and I think that it’s really fun,” said 6-year-old Carson Stettheimer.
“This has a great draw, people from all over the state as well as far as East Texas, DFW area, that come out here to enjoy the outdoor elements and the essence of what an outdoor ice skating rink is,” said Wiklund.
The rink also offers rentals, a snack bar and a warming center. It’s covered, so even if it’s snowing on and off, skaters can still stay dry.
Admission is free for people with their own skates and military members get a discount. It’s open most days from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m, weather permitting.
