Cabrera will not attend meetings to discuss pending school closures

News

El Paso Independent School District Superintendent Juan Cabrera will not be attending next week’s community meetings to discuss potential school closures, according to an EPISD spokesperson.

Instead, Cabrera will be attending a meeting in Austin with the Texas Education Agency Commissioner to discuss the Transformation Zone Grant, according to a district spokesperson.

The spokesperson said, “The meeting was set months ago and canceling it would forfeit our chance to tap into millions of dollars for funding.”

Cabrera did not respond to KTSM’s request for comment or an on-camera interview.

However, EPISD Trustee Susie Byrd said if Cabrera cannot attend the meetings, he should hold off on making any decisions regarding school closures.

As KTSM previously reported, EPISD is considering closing 10 schools to offset a $7 million deficit.

Byrd told KTSM, “I think it’s really important when you close something as important and as dear to a student as their neighborhood school that the superintendent be there to listen to feedback for new ideas and that the trustees also be there.”

According to the district, Trustee Bob Geske will also be attending the meeting in Austin with Cabrera.

Additionally, Cabrera and the district’s chief academic officer, Tamekia Brown, have a speaking engagement scheduled on June 20 in Austin.

As KTSM previously reported, the district has set two public meetings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 18 and June 19 at the EPISD Professional Development Center.

The board will vote on a final budget June 21.
