11-year-old East Point Elementary student dies in go-kart crash in East El Paso


UPDATE: The boy who died in Sunday’s crash was a sixth-grade student at East Point Elementary School.

“The Ysleta Independent School District Board of Trustees, administration, and staff send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his family and the East Point Elementary School community,” the district said in a statement.

Grief counselors are at East Point to help students and staff this week.

ORIGINAL: An 11-year-old boy was killed when a go-kart he was a passenger in crashed with a car in East El Paso on Sunday night.

The crash occurred at about 6:45 p.m. March 24 in the 11000 block of Bob Stone, an El Paso Police Department news release said.

Jayden Jefferson was in the passenger seat as Michael Jefferson, 20, drove the go-kart south on David Hill. A 2011 Nissan Sentra, driven by Ana Marie La Bianca, 26, was going east on Bob Stone when the go-kart failed to yield the right of way and collided with the car, the release said.

Jayden was ejected from the go-kart during the crash. He was taken to University Medical Center where he died, police said. 

The department’s Special Traffic Investigations unit is still investigating the crash.
