El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — A 32-year-old man was struck and killed by a car along U.S. 54 Friday afternoon.

The crash happened just before 1 p.m. along U.S. 54 North near Fred Wilson.

The man was a passenger in a pickup truck that was carrying a tarp. When the tarp started to fall out of the truck, the driver stopped. The man was trying to pick up the tarp when he was struck by another car along U.S. 54.

The crash closed U.S. 54 for hours while police investigated. The highway reopened shortly before 8 p.m. Friday.

The man died at the scene. Police say this is the fourth traffic fatality of the year in El Paso, compared to two at the same time last year.
