EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Early this Morning a rock wall collapsed right behind the El Dorado apartments in west El Paso.
According to El Paso Fire Department, the collapsed rock wall fell into the apartments damaging the back wall to the apartment complex.
According to EPFD, there was initially a gas leak that was caused by the rock retaining wall collapsing.
These apartments are located at 3500 Sun Bowl Dr., and many of the residents are UTEP students, due to its proximity to the University, some are international students.
Last night, EPFD reported 20 people displaced and no one was taken to the hospital. UTEP is working to find emergency housing for students. The Red Cross is assisting those who are not students.
“For tomorrow they will contact us if they can help us with the housing after tomorrow but for today we do have other Bhutanese, our friends living in those apartments and we said we can adjust with them for tonight,” said Sonam Choki, a UTEP exchange student.
One resident, 81-year-old Ken Eyster was staying in his truck early this Morning while he waited for red cross.
“I need to be in there because I’m broke and thats my apartment,” said Eyster.
It is unknown what caused the wall to fall and is still under investigation.
