UPDATE (3:33 p.m): The suspect has been arrested by the Las Cruces Police Department.
Reports of an armed man in the A Mountain area near the main campus went out about noon today.
The NMSU Police Department drone was deployed to help in the search but the suspect was not found and NMSU police ended their search just before 2 p.m.
Then at about 3:30 p.m., police announced the Las Cruces Police Department arrested the suspect.
UPDATE: NMSU has concluded it’s alert from earlier today. The university said police could not find the suspicious suspect.
On the emergency notification page, it posted the following: “Police Operations has been concluded in the area of A Mountain (Just east of NMSU Main Campus) SUSPECT HAS NOT BEEN LOCATED. If you see any suspicious activity or subjects in the area please call police at 575-646-3311 or Dial 911.”
ORIGINAL: An armed subject has been reported near New Mexico State University and several nearby public schools are now under a “shelter-in-place” order.
NMSU tweeted out a message at about 12:10 p.m. asking everyone to stay clear of the eastern part of the NMSU Main Campus.
“NMSU EMERGENCY ALERT: There is a possible armed subject in the area of A Mountain (just east of NMSU Main Campus) please stay clear of that area. As information becomes available, details will be posted at https://www.nmsu.edu/,” the tweet read.

Las Cruces Public Schools added the schools were placed under the “shelter-in-place” order for safety reasons.
“Due to police activity in the area, Centennial High School, Columbia Elementary, University Hills Elementary and Arrowhead Park are currently on shelter-in-place. All students and staff are safe,” a Facebook post from the school district said.
