A Las Cruces man is in jail following a violent domestic dispute on Wednesday evening.
According to a news release, it happened at about 6:30 p.m. inside a home located on the 2200 block of Corley Drive.
Police say an intoxicated Ruben Sanchez, 31, allegedly became upset and accused his girlfriend of cheating on him.
Investigators believe Sanchez then became agressive and grabbed the woman in a chokehold while she was holding their infant daughter.
According to the release, the man then allegedly threw the 2-month-old aside, pushed his girlfriend to the floor, and attempted to strangle her with both hands around her neck.
Police say the woman was able to free herself from his grasp, but Sanchez later grabbed her and forced her back inside when she tried to leave the house.
Noone inside the home was seriously injured in the crash, officials say.
Upon further investigation, police also found two pitbulls that were being held in a small cage with no access to food or water.
Police say the dogs were unable to move freely, and one had a fresh injury on the top of its head.
According to the release, the home smelled of urine, had dog feces on the floor, and was in “unsuitable” living condition for young children.
Sanchez was charged with one count of kidnapping, three counts of aggravated battery against a household member, one count of child abuse, two counts of animal cruelty, and two counts of battery on a household member.
He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
