A Las Cruces professor is now the head of the New Mexico Department of Education.
KRQE, KTSM’s sister station in Albuquerque, attended a news conference held by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Thursday.
There, Grisham named Karen Trujillo as the new secretary of the New Mexico Public Education Department.
Trujillo was a newly-elected Dona Ana County commissioner and served as the Interim Associate Dean for Research at NMSU before the appointment.
“We support teacher pay raises…(and) more resources in the schools: nurses, social workers, that wrap-around service, that idea of community schools,” she said at the conference.
Trujillo has 25 years of experience in education.
