A man was taken to a trauma center in El Paso after he reportedly shot himself while hunting Thursday afternoon.

According to the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the man, 75, was hunting in the desert west of Las Cruces when he reported having “accidentally shot” himself in the chest.

Authorities found the man next to his truck parked near the intersection of County Road B4 and County Road B5.

He suffered one gunshot wound to the chest and was flown to the El Paso hospital for treatment, according to a news release.

The incident remains under investigation, but initial reports suggest it may have been accidental.
