The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after “skeletal” human remains were found in the Organ Mountains on Friday.

According to a news release, a hiker made the discovery just after 5 p.m. near the Baylor Canyon area of the mountains.

Officials say the hiker also found a backpack with documents inside, which detectives say might help them identify the person.

The remains were taken to the University of New Mexico Office of the Medical Examiner on Saturday for further investigation.
