The third capital murder trial against Daniel Villegas will not begin next week as scheduled. On Tuesday, Judge Sam Medrano approved the defense’s motion for a 90-day continuance.
Initially, jury selection was set to begin on Monday, July 9 in Judge Medrano’s court. The prosecutors and defense met for a final hearing on Friday where the issue of a continuance was not presented by Villegas’ defense team.
On Monday, the Villegas defense filed the motion, citing the fact that Daniel’s wife is expecting their second child at the start of the originally scheduled trial date.
Judge Medrano set the new trial date for October 1, 2018.
