The Borderland has made their pick for the Kentucky Derby

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – It’s almost time for the biggest horse race of the year.

The Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, May 4 at Churchill Downs in Louisville Kentucky and many here in the Borderland have a favorite: Cutting Humor, who won the Sunland Derby back in March.

During his time here, Cutting Humor was stabled in Sunland Park Trainer Todd Fincher’s barn. Fincher said it’s a long shot for him to win the Kentucky Derby, but he said the horse has guts.

“What I see in Cutting Humor is he was a horse that was an on and off type of horse but it looks to me like he’s starting to mature really well,” Fincher said. “The last start here at Sunland he was more focused and he ran a really gutty race and beat a really nice horse Anothertwistafate he’s obviously going to need some luck and hopefully he has enough talent to win the race too.”

The Kentucky Derby is the race every horse owner, trainer and jokey dream about. Twenty horses, the best in the world running one and a quarter miles.

“The Kentucky Derby is the toughest race to get into and once you get in its the most impossible race,” said Fincher.

However, Cutting Humors trainer Todd Pletcher has had two Kentucky Derby wins in the years back. The jockey that will ride him is Corey Lanerie who is familiar with the Churchill Downs track.

“I think everyone will be rooting for Cutting Humor around here,” said Fincher.

Cutting Humor will have the No. 10 on his side for the Derby. Even though he’s not the favorite in the race, he’s the favorite here in the Borderland.

KTSM will be live at the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino Thursday, May 2 in anticipation of the Kentucky Derby, which will air on KTSM on Saturday, May 4.
