El Paso Police say they’ve arrested the man who is suspected of hitting a 4-year-old boy and fleeing the scene in the Lower Valley in early May.

Joshua David Avila, 32, of Socorro, turned himself into the Central Regional Command on Monday after investigators got a tip from a concerned citizen and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Police say Jace Contreras, 4, ran into the street toward an ice cream truck in the 9400 block of Ariel Rico the afternoon of Sunday, May 6. The driver of the dark-colored SUV failed to stop and render aid to the boy.

Contreras was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries that required a prolonged hospital stay.

Two days after the hit-and-run police released surveillance footage from a nearby home showing the vehicle suspected in the hit-and-run.

Avila was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center Monday on a warrant for accident involving personal injury or death and five outstanding municipal traffic warrants. His bond was set at $3,000.
