SpinLaunch brings new space launch system to Spaceport America

El Paso News

A new tenant called Spinlaunch has broken ground to start building a new facility at Spaceport America.

SpinLaunch is expected to build a 10,000 square foot facility to start testing its unique space launch system. The system will be sort of like slingshotting satellites into space.

A device spins quickly on the ground until it reaches hypersonic speed and then it shoots the satellite into space.

The company was started in 2014. The CEO said it’s an exciting opportunity to be able to start testing in New Mexico where it can use the airspace and miles of desert terrain.

“It’s really wonderful wide open environment to where we can actually launch vertically all the way out of this atmosphere and then come back onto the test range. So it’s one of those really rare geographical places where you can do very very high flight testing,” said Jonathan Yaney, the SpinLaunch founder and CEO.

Spinlaunch expects to start testing their system by next year.

Spaceport America still offers tours. Click here for more information.
