More than 800 special needs students from the Socorro Independent School District took part in the 32nd Annual Spring Games on Wednesday at the Socorro Activities Complex in far East El Paso.
There were many track and field events such as 10- and 25-meter walks, assisted walks, and 400-meter runs.
At the finish line of every race, there were huggers who cheered on all competitors and greeted them with a big hug at the end of the race, including firefighters from the Socorro Fire Department.
SISD Superintendent Jose Espinoza says watching the kids at this event is always inspiring to him.
“This day I look forward to every single year it truly is humbling to see the effort that the students are putting forward no matter what their challenges are. They don’t give up and they have that winning attitude,” said Espinoza.
The event is also endorsed by Special Olympics Texas, meaning the winners have the opportunity to compete locally and nationally.
