A borderland family is hoping to reach out to the community for help after one of their family members did not wake up from a medical procedure.
Laura Avila’s family says she went to the Rino Clinic in Cd. Juarez and suffered a cardiac arrest for four minutes as a result of the anesthesia before the surgery even began.
Angie Avila, Laura’s sister says Laura was then placed into a medically induced coma to prevent further damage to her brain, but her sister has yet to wake up after 12 days.
“She might be able to move her hands a little and mumble, but she will never walk again, feed herself or speak,” said Avila.
Laura was brought back to a hospital in El Paso. According to Laura’s husband Enrique Cruz, the type of anesthesia used as well as her medical records would not be released by the Juarez clinic.
“I just want to let the public know that these places market to the community on this side of the border and they must stop these clinics. They must be shut down,” said Cruz.
The family is hoping to get Laura to another hospital for a second opinion, but are limited due to insurance and costs.
“We would please ask if you have any contacts with any of these hospitals and you can get them to admit us, we would really appreciate it because our girl’s life is on the line and insurance or lack thereof should not be an issue,” said Avila.
A GoFundMe account to help with Laura’s expenses has been set up by her family in hopes of saving Laura.
