Pre-K students in Fabens honor Deputy Peter Herrera

El Paso News

The Pre-K students at Fabens Elementary School took a moment out of their day on Thursday to honor Deputy Peter Herrera, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy who died this week.

Herrera was shot on March 22 during a traffic stop in San Elizario and died two days later from cardiac arrest. Facundo Chavez, 27, is facing a Capital Murder charge in connection with his death.

The Pre-K students clapped and cheered as they released blue and white balloons Thursday morning during their Kite Day celebration.

Sheriff deputies were on hand to help honor their fallen brother.

“It’s a part of the community, this Fabens town here, everybody supports us,” said Deputy Omar Gonzalez. “Everybody is reaching out from San Eli, Clint, Horizon, everybody. It just feels good to… remember Deputy Herrera, he was a very very good deputy.”

The student also held up signs for Deputy Herrera and spent some time with the other deputies who attended.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, 12200 Vista Del Sol Dr.

He will be buried at Evergreen Cemetery East, 12400 Montana Ave. following the mass.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking for any correspondence to be sent to Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, 3850 Justice Dr., El Paso, TX 79938, with attention to the Community Services Section.
