New migrant hospitality center now open in East El Paso

El Paso News

A new migrant shelter is now open in East El Paso called Casa Del Refugiado or House of Refugee.

Migrants started arriving at the faclility on April 14 but out of the safety for these migrants Annunication House, the nonprofit who runs the facility, does not want us to disclose the exact location.

“We want to use this space to try and allow us to get out of having to use the hotels,” said Ruben Garcia, the director of Annunciation House.

The site is in response to the influx of migrants ICE and Border Patrol are releasing.

When asylum seekers arrive at the facility, they first have access to the restrooms and showers located outside, then they are assigned an area to sleep and keep their personal items.

Another area is reserved for volunteers to help contact their families or sponsors who buy them a bus or airline ticket to the place they’ll live while awaiting their immigration hearings.

“One of our mottos at annunciation house is not one refugee to the street. this building allows for much higher capacity so hopefully we can make good on that promise,” said Christa Kuck. She has been a volunteer at the Annunciation House for about 7 months.

There are hundreds of cots enough for 500 migrants but Garcia said there is a potential for up to 1500 in the future.

“We’re using only part of the building. Eventually our hope is that we will be able to accomodate somewhere between 1000 and 1500 refugees,” said Garcia.

Annuciation House asked skilled workers to volunteer to get the rest of the building in compliance.

“To the trade unions. to the plumbers to carpernters to the electricians to the mechanicals workers. I’m appealing to them to come forward and offer some of their services,” he said.

Local church Abundant Living Faith Center will pay for the warehouse space for the first three months while the Salvation Army will provide the food.
