Construction on the Eagle in the Sun Triathlon course means that athletes can expect a new route on September 2nd. With Eastlake Boulevard under construction, and a large amount of new housing development in the area, race organizers have modified the course.
“The Eastside is booming! When this course was designed 6 years ago, the streets selected were low-traffic with great road quality. That’s no longer the case,” says Race Director and Race El Paso President, Gabriela Gallegos. “We’ve re-routed the bike course to avoid construction and give athletes a smoother ride.” The new bike course will utilize Paseo Del Este and avoid Eastlake altogether.
Eagle in the Sun Triathlon participant Alfredo Jimenez is looking forward to the change. “The course is challenging but fun. [Last year,] the road conditions were not ideal, especially when speeding downhill at over 40mph with cracks all over. I lost the visor to my helmet on one of the sections on Eastlake.”
Eagle in the Sun Triathlon will take place at the Socorro ISD Athletic Complex on September 2nd. Now in its 9th year, the race is a favorite for El Paso-area and visiting triathletes, attracting 450+ participants each year, including 20% visiting athletes from outside of El Paso.
The race begins in the pool with a 400-yard swim, followed by a 12-mile bike ride and 5k run. Athletes finish the race in the football stadium after a victory lap around the track. Online registration is open at raceelpaso.com, and participants can enter in the individual triathlon (swim-bike-run), aquabike (swim-run), or as a 2- or 3-person relay team.
