The murder trial against a former Fort Bliss soldier accused of shooting and killing his roommate, a fellow soldier, while the pair were moving into their new East El Paso apartment last February is underway.

Joe Cabral, 21, is accused of shooting and killing his roommate, Zachary McGuire, who was 21 at the time of the shooting. According to a complaint affidavit KTSM obtained last year, the two hadn’t even unpacked their belongings when they began arguing inside their apartment in the 10500 block of Shannon Place in East El Paso.

According to our media partners at the El Paso Times, opening arguments were presented in court on Tuesday. Cabral’s defense attorneys are arguing that he acted in self-defense when he shot McGuire once in the head.

At the time of the shooting, both men were stationed at Fort Bliss as infantrymen with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
