EL PASO, Tx (KTSM) Mothers’ day is one of the busiest days for flower shops other than Valentine’s Day. In the Borderland, many people also celebrate Mexican Mothers’ Day too, giving these flower shops double duty.
Xochitl Flowers and Gifts in West El Paso worked all night long preparing flower bouquets. The owner says that Mexican Mothers’ day is their busiest day.
“For mothers day for Mexicans it has to be the exact day so for everybody who is Mexican, they have to get it on the exact day the 10th. For this country, they send them any other day before the 12th,” said Xochitl owner of Xochitl flowers.
The most common flower for mothers’ day is the rose. However many choose to add lilies and tulips to their arrangements. “In Mexico, it’s all about roses nowadays it’s changing a little bit, but still the roses are the most common for mothers’ day because of the Catholic Virgin Maria,” said Xochitl.
If you have not ordered flowers yet it’s not too late, Xochitl flowers will still be taking orders and delivering flowers all weekend long.
If you plan on crossing the U.S. Mexico Border for Mothers’ Day, remember, there are some flowers that can not be brought back to the U.S. This includes chrysanthemums, gladiolas, and choisya because these flowers have been found to carry harmful pests and disease.
