Mother also arrested in El Paso baby death case

El Paso News

El Paso Police said the mother of a 5-month-old baby girl killed last week was taken into custody Tuesday, making her the second arrest in the case.

Michelle Gutierrez, 22, faces a charge related to another child in the home, police said.

Investigators said Gutierrez was aware the second child, a 21-month-old, suffered similar injuries as the infant who died but failed to report it.

Gutierrez is charged with ‘injury to a child by ommission.’ Her bond was set at $20,000.

As KTSM reported, 5-month-old America Salgado died last Friday after police were called to an apartment along Vaquero Lane in West El Paso.

Officers arrested Pedro Salgado, 26, and charged him with capital murder in the baby’s death.

Salgado’s charges were upgraded Tuesday to include ‘injury to a child’ related to the older child, police said.

Court records showed Salgado remained locked in the El Paso County Jail Annex as of Tuesday evening.

Police have not said how he is related to the victims.
