Montoya hit-and-run suspect claims he fell asleep before deadly collision

The 17-year-old driver who allegedly struck and killed 13-year-old Giselle Martinez, reportedly told a friend he fell asleep at the wheel before the deadly collision.

The new information was in a complaint affidavit that was used to arrest Samuel Thomas Garcia.

According to the affidavit, investigators met with a “confidential informant” who told officers he spoke with Garcia after the crash.

The informant said Garcia told him “he woke up to a girl on the hood to his truck who then fell off” court documents state. Garcia told the informant that “he became nervous and did not know what to do. … he then back(ed) up and drove to his house,” the affidavit said.

The informants description of the truck also matched witnesses’ descriptions. He added that he saw the truck and saw a dent to the front driver side and saw the hood raised. There was also a piece of plastic that was hanging from the front lower part.
