EL PASO- As The Mighty Mujer Triathlon gets closer, one competitor works on overcoming her biggest fear.
Claudia Cortez works as a recreational therapist but after work, she’s pushing herself to do something she’s never done.
“I thought why not,” she said. “Let’s do this.”
Cortez is participating in this year’s Mighty Mujer, an all-female test of strength involving biking, running and swimming.
“I used to be terrified of water,” Cortez said. “I’ve been working on my swimming technique and taking lessons. I can swim now.”
A big victory Cortez has already accomplished ahead of race day. She said it’s the women in the race that give her inspiration.
“Everybody has been very encouraging,” she said. “Everybody helps each other out so it’s been a really good experience”
A little bit of inspiration she hopes to pass on to her patients.
“I always try to encourage my patients to do things that they enjoy,” she said.”I let them know that I’m having fun doing it and I’m learning about myself. I can share those things with my patients.”
KTSM is a proud media sponsor of the Mighty Mujer. The race will be broadcasted at 7:30 a.m., on April 21. Then at 8 a.m. the broadcast continues on Facebook to carry the region’s only all-female triathlon.
