Middle school student wins prestigious literacy award

A Hernando Middle School student overcomes the odds and wins a prestigious literacy award.
Hugo Hernandez’s class surprised him with a special breakfast after winning the 2019 National 180 Student Award.
Doctors said Hugo would never be able to read because of a medical condition, but Hugo showed personal growth.
He said he was shocked when he saw his teachers and classmates ready to celebrate with him in a special ceremony. 
“My teacher helped me alot with this,” Hugo said. 
His teacher, Brenda Rios, wanting him to remember the moment forever. She worked with him to improve his reading. 
“I  could see the obstacles that he faced,” Rios said. “He had this desire and drive inside of him that defied what the medical report said.”
Hugo overwhelmed with tears of happiness, since the road to reading is not always easy, but worth the dedication.
“I learn new stuff and I like to read about history or something that is happening,” Hugo said.
