One very deserving high school student received a scholarship Tuesday that will allow her to make a difference in people’s lives.
Silva Health Magnet Senior Jaylene Placencia, who plans to be a nurse, received the ‘Mickey Solis Scholarship’ from KTSM’s very own Felipa Solis during a special school ceremony.
The scholarship is in honor of Felipa’s late husband Mickey, who was a former El Paso County Commissioner and who attended Jefferson High School.
“For me, it’s a very personal matter because my grandfather passed away from cancer when I was barely coming to Silva. I made it my goal to help others like I saw the nurses helping my family,” Placencia said.
The scholarship seemed like a great way for Felipa to honor her late husband’s legacy while also giving recognition to the nurses who helped her following the tragic car crash that took his life and her recent battle with breast cancer.
“We decided what a fitting tribute it would be for this year and hopefully the future to recognize the nurses and students here at Silva Magnet,” Felipa said.
Placencia plans on attending UTEP where she will major in Nursing.
