The Mayor of Anthony, Texas, Martin Lerma is resigning citing health issues.

Lerma made the announcement during a City Council meeting this week.

He sent KTSM a statement on Facebook saying:

“It’s something I’ve thought of doing for several months. Back in May I had surgery on my left shoulder and my work schedule changed so I was not able to dedicate as much time to the town as before. I also have another surgery coming up next month on my right shoulder that will keep me off for longer. There is also a couple of other health issues I need to take care of.  I feel we have a great team now, that I felt comfortable enough to step down. I was elected in May 2015 for two-year term And was re-elected May of 2017 for a second term which would of ended this May. Both elections I had an opponent. I also want to thank all the community Of Anthony, town council , employees, friends and family for all the support you gave me throughout these 4 years.”

Benjamin Romero is serving as Mayor Pro-tem and is set to take over Lerma duties.

An election date has not been set to replace him.
