A 22-year-old man was thrown out of his vehicle and killed in Thursday night’s accident on Loop 375 South near Montwood.

Victor Meza Jr. died when the 2005 Ford Explorer he was driving crashed into a 2002 Toyota Tundra, driven by Jose Orozco, 24, at about 9:09 p.m. on Feb. 28, according to an El Paso Police Department news release.

Police said that Meza was driving in the center emergency lane at a high rate of speed while Orozco was in the left lane. When the Explorer entered the left lane the two vehicles collided and Meza lost control of the Explorer, which crashed into the far right barrier.

The impact threw Meza, who was not wearing a seatbelt, out of the vehicle. He was taken to Del Sol Hospital where he died, police said.

Police suspect that alcohol was a factor in the accident, along with speeding and driving in the emergency lane.

A passenger in the Tundra was not injured, police said.
