Leaving your car running outside to heat up from the freezing overnight temperatures could cost you, the El Paso Police Department reminds.

According to the department’s Auto Theft Task Force, it’s against the law to leave running vehicles unattended, and doing so can result in citations.

The task force says leaving cars running makes them vulnerable to thieves.

This rule does not apply to vehicles with remote start-up systems, but only if the key fob is in the owner’s possession.
