A Las Cruces church was waiting to receive migrants on Christmas, but the buses never came.
El Calvario Methodist Church accepts migrants every week. This Christmas they had volunteers ready. ICE normally drops the migrants off in buses, but they didn’t show up.
“We had people who had already signed up to do the Christmas eve, the meals, the staying over night, everything was all prepped, except we didn’t get any refugees,” says Anselmo Delgado-Martinez, the Coordinator of Operations at El Calvario.
They found out about the migrants being released at the Downtown Greyhound station through the news.
El Calvario did receive fifteen migrants this week, and ICE dropped them off. So they are hopeful that things will go back to normal.
The Church provides food, clothing, and shelter to migrants.
A mother from Honduras is staying at El Calvario with her son. Despite all the struggles she is happy to be in America, where her son is safe.
