KTSM was nominated Friday for two Regional Sports EMMYs from the Lone Star Emmy Chapter.
“I am humbled to be nominated for two Lone Start Sports EMMYs,” KTSM Sports Director Andy Morgan said. “Highlighting the local sports scene is my passion and I pride myself on being able to tell the stories that impact our local sports community.”
“Defenseless” featured a three-month long investigation found nearly 40% of El Paso area high schools are using a helmet that tested so poorly that researchers determined no athlete should be using it.
“I could not have put the helmet story together without Cesar Ruiz, who I share this nomination with,” Morgan said. “It’s important for me to start a discussion about how local high schools can do a better job to keep athletes safe.”
Ahead of the 2017-2018 season, KTSM sat down with then-head coach Tim Floyd to talk about rebounding from a less than stellar season the year before.
“At the time, fans either loved or didn’t really care for Tim Floyd. There was no in-between. This story addressed the struggles college basketball coaches across the county are facing, including UTEP. I’d also like to thank our Chief Photographer, Danny Gallarzo, who is my co-nominee, for his help with this story.”
The 2018 Lone Star Regional Sports EMMY Awards will be held August 20 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
