Juárez mayor: Juan Gabriel’s ashes to be kept in Juárez

The mayor of Ciudad Juárez, Javier Gonzalez Mocken, says Juan Gabriel’s family has decided to keep the singer’s ashes in his Juárez home on Avenida 16 de Septiembre and Peru.

Mocken says he has been in close contact with Juan Gabriel’s family, who arrived to Juárez on Wednesday night. A press conference was held Thursday morning to discuss details on the funeral.

The mayor says the city plans to hold several events to honor “El Divo de Juárez,” two of which will take place Friday, August 2nd and Saturday, August 3rd. 

According to Juárez officials, ‘La Gran Plaza’ on Calle Mariscal in downtown Juárez, will be inaugurated with the name ‘La Gran Plaza Juan Gabriel’ on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Mocken says people from Juárez and El Paso and welcomed to the event to honor the Mexican icon. 

He says several major avenues such as Avenida Lerdo, Avenida Juárez, and Avenida 16 de Septiembre will be closed off on Saturday for a cultural event featuring the musical group Sonora Santanera. 

The mayor says they are looking into the possibility of other events, but they are waiting for Juan Gabriel’s family to arrive into town before those events are confirmed.
