Interstate 10 near Downtown El Paso will remain closed through Friday, according to TxDOT.
This is as crews continue to make major repairs following a fiery semi-truck crash Thursday afternoon.
TxDOT recommends drivers take alternate routes if you need to travel near the Downtown area. Those heading Westbound have to exit at the Downtown exit and Eastbound traffic will exit at the Mesa exit. It recommends using the Border Highway or Montana as a detour.
In viewer video sent to KTSM, you can see the truck engulfed in flames moments after the crash. You can also see the driver make a miraculous escape with only minor injuries.
Investigators said it appears the driver was distracted at the time of the crash. The fiery wreck also left a utility bridge over I-10 heavily damaged. The bridge, next to a Shell gas station on Mesa, holds water, phone and gas lines.
“Luckily the workers at the gas station were quick and activated the emergency shut off so no fuel was circulating through the lines while this happened,” El Paso Fire Department spokesperson Enrique Aguilar said.
KTSM was the only station on scene just after midnight as TxDOT crews began removing the charred wreckage of the truck from the scene.
TxDOT brought in special engineers from Austin to help with the repair efforts.
