Homeland Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen visiting El Paso facilities

El Paso News

Department of Homeland Security Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen is visiting El Paso Wednesday to tour Border Patrol facilities.

A Department of Homeland Security news release confirmed Nielsen’s El Paso visit.

The release said her plan was to “visit the El Paso Del Norte Port of Entry and the El Paso Border Patrol Station, as well as receive a briefing at the El Paso Station’s Satellite Processing Facility.”

U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar’s office was also notified of her visit, a spokeswoman said.

Escobar’s office encouraged Nielsen to meet with immigration advocates and business leaders and offered to help facilitate those meetings, but did not hear back from Nielsen’s office.

The release that mentions Nielsen’s visit said that El Paso’s U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Sector is over capacity by about 280 percent.

After her El Paso visit, Nielsen is expected to visit Yuma, Ariz., the release said.
