A man was sent to the hospital after he accidentally shot himself after hiking down Mount Cristo Rey, according to a member of the Mount Cristo Rey Restoration Committee.

Officials say several hikers were coming down the mountain to their vehicles and tried to jump the gates, which were closed for the day.

The hiker, who was carrying a gun, tried catching it as it slipped from his pocket and shot himself in the leg.

No other injuries were reported.
