A GoFundMe account is asking for donations to help fund the Mexican American Cultural Institute.
The account was created in March, but recently brought to KTSM’s attention by a viewer.
MACI is supposed to be funded by the taxpayers. It bills itself as a champion for El Pasoans.
“As El Paso continues to slam its footprint into the world economy, it is more important than ever to cultivate El Paso’s cultural identity,” according to the GoFundMe account.
KTSM reported back in April that the Abraham Chavez Theatre was supposed to house the Institute, but, the group in charge of fundraising extra money for construction ran into financial issues. The City pulled the plug on the partnership, pulling the Theatre from consideration for the Institute.
