Friends and family remember Richard Contreras

El Paso News

“He was just the person that was always happy no matter what, he definitely brightened up a room every time he walked in”, that’s how Ruth Clark remembers 21 year old Richard Contreras.

Contreras lost his life after a hiking accident at McKelligon Canyon Saturday afternoon. Two days later and students at his Alma mater gathered to remember their friend and be with his family.

Contreras was part of the Bel Air wrestling team, his former coach describing him as a natural athlete, one that would give his time to help others.

Dozens of current and former students lined up in the stadium taking turns hugging Contreras’ family. Many of them with tears in their eyes as they expressed their condolences with the parents many of them knew on a personal level.

A life that was taken too soon but one that won’t soon be forgotten.

“We love him, everybody misses him, everybody’s still talking about it and it’s just hard for everybody”, says Ruth.

A gofundme account has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. The page can be found here.
