Looks like El Paso has a new state representative. Democrat Art Fierro won Tuesday’s special election to replace Joe Pickett.

Fierro captured about 53 percent of the vote with all 37 precincts reporting. Former El Paso City Council Rep. Michiel Noe came up with 27 percent. Hans Sassenfeld, the only Republican in the race, snagged about 20 percent. You can see the results here.

According to the El Paso County Elections Department, about 4,713 voters cast ballots out of the 88,034 eligible.

Fierro, an EPCC trustee and chair, told KTSM he has two main focuses for the region: education and workforce development.

“What’s needed immediately is more funding for teachers,” Fierro told KTSM.

He will replace current State Rep. Joe Pickett who is stepping down from representing District 79 to battle cancer.
