Nearly two years after the body of 26-year-old Devon Leatherbury was found shot in the far Northeast El Paso desert, El Paso Police say they’ve arrested a father and son in connection to his murder.
Richard Zelonis, 55, and Aaron Zelonis, 27, are were each arrested and charged with Murder on Thursday.
As KTSM previously reported, Leatherbury was found in the 12700 block of Dyer near Railroad on August 16, 2016. He had been shot in the head and left in the desert. For years, El Paso Police and his mother, Jenette Vargas, pleaded for anyone with information on Leatherbury’s final hours to come forward to investigators.
Details are still limited, but El Paso Police say both suspects were booked into the El Paso County Detention Center on Thursday. Richard Zelonis has a bond set at $750,000 while his son’s bond is set at $1 million.
A criminal search of the father and son indicate both have had significant run-ins with the law including burglary, assault, evading arrest, credit card abuse and possession of a controlled substance. It is unclear what connection or motive the pair allegedly had in the murder.
KTSM will continue to update this story as additional information becomes available.
